Hazardous materials
- Wet or unsealed paint, solvents, gasoline, oil (in large quantities)
- Pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals
- Asbestos-containing materials
- Propane tanks (above 1 lb)
- Anything labeled flammable, explosive, or corrosive
Where to take them: Your county usually runs a household hazardous waste collection day or drop-off. Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and Washtenaw counties all have programs.
Medical and biohazard waste
- Sharps and needles
- Blood-soaked or fluid-soaked items (without remediation)
- Prescription medications
- Medical equipment with contamination
Where to take them: Most pharmacies accept medication drop-off. Sharps belong in approved containers — most county health departments accept them.
Radioactive or commercial-regulated materials
- Smoke detectors with radioactive elements (limited quantities OK)
- Industrial chemicals or solvents
- Anything requiring a hazardous waste manifest
Live ammunition and weapons
We can't transport live ammunition, firearms, or explosives. Local law enforcement runs periodic safe-disposal programs in Southeast Michigan.
